Welcome to the Online Intergroup
If you would like to join ...
If you would like to join OIAA, write
to us. NOTE: OIAA is a
service entity. If you are looking for an online AA group, please visit
the email or
real-time meeting directories.
Membership in the Intergroup is open to all online AA groups and all
AA members. There are no dues or fees for membership. The Intergroup is
self-supporting through contributions of AA members and groups.
There are two classes of membership: voting and nonvoting.
Voting members include each registered online AA group and the
current Intergroup officers. Each registered online AA group
participating as a member should select an Intergroup representative (IGR)
to exercise its membership. It is suggested that IGRs have at least one
year of continuous sobriety and that they be active members of their
groups. Groups also may select alternate IGRs to act in the IGR's
absence.
Nonvoting members include any AA member who wishes to join the
Intergroup. He or she may participate in the discussions of the Assembly
but may not offer motions or vote.
Non-member online AA groups also can
take advantage of Intergroup services. For example, membership is not
required to list your group
in the OIAA Meeting Directories. Our 12th Step,
Public Information, and
Cooperation With the Professional Community
committees also are available to work with any online AA entity.
If you've already joined ...
In OIAA, we have a system whereby each new member is assigned a
"welcomer," just to be sure you have a name and address to turn to if
you are puzzled about what's going on in this service entity. We hope
you will write your welcomer and ask any questions that occur to you.
There are several sources of information available to help you get
oriented:
The Welcome Letter that the mailing list manager sent you when
you joined.
The Bylaws, Policies & Guidelines, and Netiquette Advisory
documents.
(available in the members section of the website or in
PDF or
Word format)
The current officer and
committee reports and the Historian's Library.
(available in the members section of the website)
That's a lot of reading, and no one is expected to memorize them;
however, a familiarity with their contents will be useful when looking
up details later. You may find it helpful to print some or all of
the operating documents.
How we communicate ...
There are three ways in which we communicate within OIAA:
The Business List
Discussion on the business list is limited to the agenda. Motions,
election materials, committee reports and vote results are posted there.
Members of the Assembly discuss the current agenda items only. All other
discussion takes place on The Open Forum (see below).
Participants are expected to use good judgment. Derogatory personal
remarks about other Assembly members are prohibited. The Decorum
Guideline applies. Irrelevant, disruptive, or abusive posts will
generate a warning, then removal from the list. A full explanation of
the decorum rules can be found in the OIAA Bylaws and the Policies &
Guidelines document.
Subject to Assembly's consent in accordance with the Bylaws, the
Chair sets the weekly agenda to inform members of the business items
being discussed. The agenda has the following monthly format:
Week One: Committee Reports
Week Two: Motions, Presentation and
Discussion
Week Three: Voting, No Discussion
Week Four: Voting Results and
Minority Opinion
The Committee Lists
Each OIAA committee has its own mailing list to facilitate
communication among committee members.
An overview of OIAA committees
can be found here.
The Open Forum
Informal discussion takes place in The Open Forum. For more
